Intelligence

Every child is unique and learns differently. Each child possess different qualities in which they learn, hands on and so forth. Children need an environment where they can thrive not only academically but where they can meet their physical, cognitive and social needs and interests. It is important to understand how well the individual child utilizes their skills and how they learn. Understanding their stregths and challenges helps us to support the individual child. We want to help modify and set goals to help the child thrive overall.

When provided with an assessment/testing, some children may feel pressured or anxious and guess on items and get them either correct or wrong. Children may have the knowledge and understand things on the test but fails to choose the correct answeres for whatever reason. My son for example, often feels he must catch up with his other classmates when it comes to testing and often does not want to be the last one turning in his test. In much case, he does not take his time to thoroughly read the questions or options and marks the wrong answers.

My youngest son, has tests administered every so often where they are only given 5 min to complete 50 math questions. Though he does well, when he was given the MAP or PASS testing for South Carolina Schools, he was in a rush to finish, because of the other test given in the class from time to time. He did exceptional well above his grade, but just want to provide that there are many factors in which a child face when it comes to these assessments.

Testing for Intelligence Around the World

In Germany, they believe in altering the forms of learning to meet the individual needs of the chlid. "The focus is to encouarage each individual pupil to achieve all that he or she is capbable of, guided by the learning requirements for the respective school year. It is important to monitor the individual development and performance of each pupill on a constant basis, as well as their working and social behavior and assess the factor comprehensively" (Assessments in Germany).

  1. I like your post. I too agree that there are other factors that children face during assessement that may alter their score. I noticed you mentioned your son taking the SC standardized test. Are you from SC as well? If so, what part? Thank you for sharing the information from Germany. I found it very interesting.

  2. Rhonda,
I loved your post on intelligence and on test taking. I completely agree with you in regards to anxiety and pressure children sometimes feel when taking tests, I have also experienced that with my own son. He can really know the material inside and out but when it is time to take a test, Especially in math he also experiences a lot of pressure and anxiety of doing poorly, and being the last one to finish that he will hurry up and rush without thoroughly reading the questions. And I also agree with you when it comes to the classrooms, There are many things that need to be considered when evaluating a child's overall performance. Great Job!

  3. I truly believe that it is almost impossible to take a test successful if you are under pressure. As you stated every child is unique and learn differently. Geremany appears to be on the right track, altering the test to meet the needs of the children.
Thank you for your post is was cery formative and I enjoyed reading it.

  4. As I read your information from Germany and reflect of what I have learned about Australia, it seems that the US has some growing to do when it comes to assessing our children. It will be interesting to continue to gain insight into other regions. Perhaps with a better understanding of their methods I could at least develop a better process to evaluate my own students as I continue to prepare them for the pressures of standardized tests. Thanks.
